KSV News: Short Round 055

Connections Between KSV Members On Line:

Our New Bulletin Board

For many years, our original website. Bulletin Board feature was one of best ways to exchange informal electronic comms between our members.  Thank you Dennis Mannion for making it possible!  It was used regularly for all sorts of written member exchanges. It was inclusive, colorful and a great way to keep our membership connected and active. The death of our web master and dissolution of his web site has rendered this original Bulletin Board unusable.

When Facebook came on the scene, some of our members migrated there for chats, photo exchanges and general BS.  But, this was a minority chunk of our 1,000+ card carrying membership.  And, being Facebook, many non members soon latched on to the site, so it now has over 1,000 +/- followers.  So, Facebook has been a partial replacement, although no place near as pervasive within our membership. While some of our members are dedicated Facebook users, the vast majority never or rarely open it.

We have struggled mightily with trying to find a replacement for our earlier Bulletin Board to host on our new website khesanh.vet.  One that is “open” and easy to use.

Our initial attempt was to use the Bulletin Board feature built into our website host, WordPress.  The WordPress version is a powerful tool for bulletin board type communications, and works for literally millions of users.  The challenge is that WordPress requires a PITAss registration and login that many of our members would likely avoid using.

Our first shot at following the KISS rule was to disable the WordPress Bulletin Boards login.  Hoping that would allow our members to easily use the feature.  But..... that ended up as a disaster in about two weeks.  Every online troll and bot in the neighborhood found our site and posted their garbage on it. Crappola!!!

Lesson learned: anything you put on line which does not have a rigorous and secure login will be found and hacked!  So, just a bit of  time, plus technology and hackers quickly rendered our first bulletin board attempt not workable.  Back to the drawing board!

After a couple of months of  research and dead ends later, we believe we now have a viable solution for our new Discussion Board!!

We will still use the tried and proven WordPress Bulletin Board feature on our khesanh.vet. web site.  But using KISS, we have now pre-registered every single card carrying KSV Member on this new Discussion Board.  No complex and time consuming member registration required- we have done it for you.

This member pre-registration uses a combination of member name and “khe sanh”.  For member “John Grunt”, his pre registered log in is:

User: jgruntkhe  (first name initial + last name + khe)

Password: johnsanh  (first name + sanh)

Your instructions are posted on https://khesanh.vet/discussion-board/forum/first-forum/.  Once you have signed in the first time, your web browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, etc) can remember your log in so you do not have to remember it a second time.  More details posted on the web page above.

Please, give it a try!!  Tell us about your results privately by email to admin@ahesanh.vet   Let’s again make this  Bulletin Board  THE way for all KSV members to share thoughts, announcements and memories.  Along with a little trash talk!!
