Major Dolan Allen Winslow, USAF retired

August 28, 1931, ~ April 2, 2016

Dolan Allen Winslow, 84, passed away as the sun rose on April 2, 2016. He was born on August 28, 1931, in Belvidere, Perquimans County, NC to parents Dempsey and Mary Winslow and older brother Gale.

As Dolan wrote, his life’s path carried him from “Mules to Airplanes”; from an amazing Quaker farming community in eastern North Carolina to military posts around the globe. As a navigator and then instructor, Dolan spent his military career focusing on professional excellence and teaching others to follow suit. He flew more than 7,800 hours without incident. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross with Oak Leaf cluster for service conducting critical aerial resupply efforts and lifesaving medevac missions in Khe Sanh, Republic of Vietnam in 1971, as well as multiple awards of the Air Medal and the Air Force Commendation Medal. His military service pales in comparison to his life as a faithful and devout Christian, a husband, a father, a proud grandfather, and a friend.

Dolan’s greatest joys in retirement were spending time with loved ones, especially his grandkids, working with his hands and expanding his knowledge through research. His words were few but filled with wisdom. He led us in life and in death with kindness and strength.

Dolan was preceded in death by his wife and mother of his children, Mary Sue Cook Winslow, his parents, his brother, and his beloved cousin Leslie. He was also preceded in death by his darling sweetheart and beautiful wife, Deloris Brown Clifton Winslow. He is survived by his children, Denise Golder, David Winslow and his wife Daphne, Kathleen Templeton and her husband David, and Mark Winslow. Papa Dolan is survived by seven grandchildren: Joshua, Gabriel and Sarah Grace Winslow; Conor and Ian Templeton; Dawson and Jonathan Winslow. He is also survived by an extraordinary network of extended family.
