John Moynihan

November 24, 1946 – September 6, 2026

John Banks Moynihan, age 79, died on September 6, 2026, after a long battle with complications related to Agent Orange exposure. He was the son of Frank and Claire (Banks) Moynihan, born on November 24, 1946, in Glens Falls, NY. John attended St. Mary’s Academy and graduated from Glens Falls High School in 1965. After enlisting in the US Marine Corps and training at Parris Island, he was stationed at Camp Lejeune, Camp Pendleton, and Camp Garcia (Vieques), before being deployed to Vietnam. He served in the 1st Marine Air Wing during the Tet Offensive as a lance corporal. During his deployment he was stationed at various bases including Khe Sanh, Da Nang, Quang Tri, and Chu Lai. He was awarded the Marine Corp rifle expert and pistol sharpshooter badges.

After his military service, John met his wife Marylois, who also attended St. Mary’s Academy. He then enrolled at Siena College, graduating in 1973 with a degree in business. He was the owner and manager of Moynihan’s Liquor Store in Queensbury for many years.

In retirement, John continued his lifelong passion of playing golf and frequently played in tournaments across New York. He was a longtime member of the Glens Falls Country Club, and later Hiland Park and Kingswood. He shot par for the first time at age 16, played on the Marine Corp golf team at Camp Lejeune, made 7 hole-in-ones, and maintained a low handicap into his 60s. He enjoyed sharing his golf wisdom with his grandchildren.

John loved watching his children play sports, especially basketball, and closely followed Notre Dame and the New York Mets along with his sons.

In retirement, John was a voracious reader of both history and fiction and kept a grading system that would indicate whether he would pass the books along to his children and their spouses. He discovered a love of travel in his later years and visited many countries in Europe, Central America and the Caribbean with Marylois. His greatest joy in his later years was following the academic and athletic accomplishments of his grandchildren.

John is survived by his wife of 55 years, Marylois (O’Connor), and their four children: John (Angela) of Windham, NH, Kathleen Marie (Jason) Thompson of Jacksons Gap, AL, and twin sons Robert O’Connor (Colleen) of New York City and Patrick Banks (Liz) of Elkins Park, PA; nine grandchildren: Maddie, Will and Max Moynihan, Collin and Cam Thompson, Kerry and Bridget Moynihan, and Henry and Julia Moynihan; his brother Fran (Maureen) of Salem, SC, and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, John is predeceased by his aunt Mary Agnes Moynihan, his brother-in-law Michael O’Connor, and his grandson John Moynihan III.
