Bruce W. Morris, age 59, a longtime resident of Rye Brook, NY, died peacefully at home surrounded by his family and friends on August 13, 2006. Bruce endured many orthopedic surgeries in the last several years but lost his most recent battle with cancer.
Bruce was born on March 4, 1947, in Stamford, CT, to the late Andrew and Ragna Wallen Morris. Bruce graduated from Stamford Catholic High School, Stamford, CT. He joined the Seabees shortly thereafter and served with them in the Vietnam War. Bruce was assigned to the CBMU 301 / Bravo unit at Khe Sanh, RVN. During the 77-day siege of the marine combat base, Bruce managed to keep equipment up and running in spite of heavy artillery, rocket, and mortar fire. The airstrip at Khe Sanh was vital to the survival of the combat base. He served with courage and that “Can Do” spirit of the USN Seabees. Bruce was awarded the Combat Action Ribbon, Presidential Unit Citation, Navy Unit Citation, National Defense medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Gold Frame and Palm, Vietnam Civil Action Medal with Gold Frame and Palm, and the Vietnam Campaign Medal. He was loved and respected by his fellow Seabees.
He was a former employee of Westmore Fuel, Inc. where he worked as a mechanic. He belonged to many organizations, including the Byram Shore Boat Club, American Legion Post 93, Byram Veterans Association and Vietnam Veterans Association. Bruce was an avid golfer, fisherman, boater and hunter. He enjoyed attending classic car shows. Bruce loved dogs and had fond memories of his dogs Barney, Franklin and Tiffany, who passed before him. Bruce enjoyed hosting super bowl parties, card games and holiday barbecues for family and friends, and in spite of being ill, insisted that the 4th of July barbecue go on as planned at his home. Bruce touched the lives of many with his unselfish manner. He was always ready to lend a helping hand to someone in need. His friends and family will never forget his friendly smile, happy eyes and gregarious laughter. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Joann Sabia Morris, brothers Andrew and wife Susan of Wisconsin, David and wife Darlene of Rhode Island, sisters, Christine Sadonis of Florida, Elizabeth Morris of Rhode Island and sister-in-law Sandra Lotter and husband Phil of Greenwich, CT.
