March 13, 1949 — April 20, 2023
Joseph L. Mannone of Malden, formerly of Somerville, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 20th, 2023. He was 74 years of age.
Joseph is the beloved and devoted husband of Janet (Kasperwicz) Mannone. He is the loving father of Nicole Speranza and her husband John, Brian Oppedisano and his wife Joanna, and Adam Oppedisano. Cherished grandfather of Stephania Speranza, John “Jacky” Speranza, Abbi Oppedisano, Avery Oppedisano, Lauren Oppedisano, Paul Oppedisano, and Steven Oppedisano. Brother of Anthony Mannone, John “Jack” Mannone, Diane Mannone, Donna Lakin and her husband Wally, the late Dorothy Fagan and her surviving husband Fran, the late James Mannone and his surviving wife Linda, and the late Debra Mannone and her surviving husband James Kinney. He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
Joe was born to the late Dorothy and Gaspar “James” Mannone of Somerville. After graduating from high school, he eagerly enlisted in the Marines, serving two tours of duty in Vietnam, and surviving the notorious Battle of Khe Sanh. Upon returning home after the war, he worked as a skilled carpenter. Soon thereafter, he reconnected and married his childhood sweetheart, Jan. Supported by Jan’s efforts to chase after his dream job, he quickly became a member of the Somerville Police Department, where he enjoyed many rewarding years as a highly respected police officer.
The simplest pleasures in life brought great joy to Joey. As an avid hunter and fisherman, he passed on his love of the outdoors to his three children and seven grandchildren. The many land and sea adventures he shared with his fishing and hunting “buddies” were amongst his fondest memories.
