Lawrence William ‘Larry’ Kubley

Lawrence William “Larry” Kubley, 74, died Dec. 26, 2020, at his home in Ketchikan.
He was born Nov. 10, 1946, in Ketchikan, AK. He graduated from Ketchikan High School in 1964.
His first job was working fish traps on the F/V Annette out of Metlakatla, and he worked on several seiners and longliners over the years.
Larry Kubley served three years in the U.S. Navy Seabees with CBMU-301/ Bravo. Larry was at the now famous siege of Khe Sanh where he endured 77 days of bombardment by North Vietnamese forces. He was on the last convoy out of Khe Sanh when Seabees tore up the airstrip and destroyed bunkers and convoyed the dangerous long road to Dong Ha. He was a lifetime member of the Khe Sanh Veterans Association.
He was the owner and operator of the Sourdough Bar in Ketchikan, AK, until his son, Wally, took it over.
Mr. Kubley was a member of the Elks Lodge, Pioneers of Alaska Igloo 16, and the American Legion Post 3.
He coached Ketchikan Little League for several years.
“He loved fly fishing with family and friends at Mirror Lake, as well as deer and moose hunting and hosting cocktail hour,” his family writes
Mr. Kubley was preceded in death by his first wife, Sandra Quinn; parents, Walter and Fern Kubley; and sister Kaaren Kubley.
He is survived by his wife, Julia; sons, Don Kubley (Julie) of Seattle, and Wally Kubley (Adri) of Ketchikan; brother, Don Kubley (Tracy) of Juneau; nieces, Shona Hosley of Ketchikan and Devyan Kubley of Juneau; nephew, Dylan Kubley (Abby) of Juneau; great-niece, Paige Hosley (Anders) of Portland, Oregon; great-nephew, Benjamin Kubley; and numerous extended family members.
